Odour Control Technical Information
“Your sense of smell and how it reacts to odours”
Odours are generally complex mixtures of chemicals produced from proteins, bacteria and organic material that are released into the air. The lingering foul odours that emanate from these deposits permeate into every space and get up our noses. The odour-producing bacteria continue to multiply and create ever-worsening smells.
In basic terms odours float in the air as molecules. When sniffed into the nose these molecules reach a dead end passage at the top of the nasal cavity. This cavity contains thousands of hair-like antenna called cilia, anchored in thousands of closely packed cells, with specialised chemo-receptors. When the odour molecules reach the cilia they trigger nerve impulses to the receptors, which in turn relay them through the olfactory bulb to the brain, identifying the smell as good or bad.
Airx 3 Dimensional Odour Control
The scientists from the Monell Chemical Senses Centre at the University of Pennsylvania, the foremost research institution in the world in odours and how they are perceived, have determined that odorous molecules of specific size and shape will only fit certain receptors in the olfactory system. Thus, if the shape and size or ‘geometry’ of the bad odour molecules is changed (not masked), the odour will not be recognised or perceived as a bad odour.
The complex product they developed to accomplish this change in geometry to foul odour molecules is
Airicide®,
which is used in every
Airx
product provided by
Xeria Solutions Ltd.
A division of ‘The Bullen Companies’ of Folcroft, Pennsylvania, Airx Laboratories have been at the forefront of total odour control solutions for over 30 years.
“
Airicide®
is not a masking agent nor will it desensitise the ability to smell good odours”
The key to
3 dimensional odour control
involves removing not only the
airborne odours,
but actively treating the causes of the smell. This involves using cleansing and disinfecting products to treat odour producing material for effective
surface odour control
and using biocides and bio-enzymatic products to ‘eat’ the food source for effective
sub-surface odour control.
Odour control products that only work in the air will miss the source of most odours.
